Day 12: Sun 16 Nov - Ratnagiri to Devgad

Fine and Sunny 19 to 34deg C
Ride: 93km; total: 513km

Ratnagiri to DevgadWe roll through the rolling countryside, passing lazy rivers, and making our way to Devgad - a sleepy coastal village that is part colourful fishing port, part coastal resort. Here, enjoy a beautiful beach and some killer Pau Bhaji. Distance: 95km | Ride Time: 7 hours | Overnight: Devgad

Breakfast was at 0730h this morning and when we entered the breakfast area all we got were a lot of blank looks but no activity. All most of us wanted was a cuppa tea or coffee. Anyway, they eventually got the message, and everything started to flow out quickly. I had a nice plate of curried fried rice and some other white rice/coconut dish that went really well with the fried rice. All that with a couple of cups of Indian tea and toast and I was well and truly satisfied.

We got away about 0820h into fairly light traffic, certainly nowhere near as much as yesterday afternoon/last night. Being a Sunday, as soon as we cleared the city area the traffic disappeared.

We headed south on a really nice ride through rolling countryside, along lazy rivers meandering through sleepy coastal villages. Half were just fishing ports and half were coastal resorts with some potentially beautiful beaches that were in urgent need of a ‘Clean up India’ campaign. The beaches were absolutely deserted, obviously it’s their quiet time at the moment. The ever-present steep, long hills tested some guys out, but despite a couple feeling a little off colour, only one guy decided to ride in the support bus. The other two hung in there till the end. The heat was pretty intense today and it was difficult to consume enough water to stay hydrated. We didn’t finish till 1600h when the afternoon sun was at its harshest. While those who don’t enjoy the heat did it tough, those of us who prefer it hot had a fairly easy day, considering it was over 90km.
